Fun facts about Zoology – why it might just be the career for you

For many of us, trips to the zoo as a child were full of wonder. We were suddenly transported to an exciting new world, filled with sights and sounds that we’d never experienced before. The brilliant beasts that we saw came in every size, shape and hue, all from different parts of the world, with varying colourful enclosures and fascinating dietary and care needs.

Zoos and wildlife sanctuaries not only offer safety to exotic animals in need but are also a space for growth and learning. In a controlled environment, people are able to come and learn about these creatures, where they have come from and the reasons why they are cared for in captivity. As humans, we often forget that we share this world with thousands of animals who also call it home. Spending time in a zoo environment, whilst being educational and fascinating, can also lead us to think about the bigger picture and how we can help maintain our Earth to keep all its inhabitants safe and thriving.

Do you have a strong connection with animals? Deep care for their safety and wellbeing? A sense of wonder and curiosity about the creatures that share our world? Then the study of animals, specifically a Zoologist course, might be the perfect fit for you.

Our certificate in Zoology offers you a chance to learn about all aspects of this highly competitive industry, not just captive husbandry but also enclosure maintenance and design, equipping you with the vital knowledge and skills needed to thrive in the field. Our course is a great introduction if you are looking to pursue a career in zoos, wildlife sanctuaries, safari parks and aquariums.

Completing one of our Zoology courses online gives you the freedom to explore and learn from the comfort of your own home, allowing a more flexible approach to your studies that suits your schedule.

Not convinced yet? We will let the wildlife speak for itself as we take you through some of the best Zoology facts about our Australian animal pals – you never know, you might just be inspired to follow in the footsteps of Darwin!

Beasties and bugs

  • Saltwater Crocodiles cool themselves down by opening their mouths – as they don’t sweat, keeping their mouths open allows for thermoregulation, the air cooling the skin of the mouth and thus regulating their temperature and aiding in vital bodily functions
  • Fitzroy River turtles can breathe through their bottom
  • A baby Echidna is known as a ‘puggle’
  • Numbats will block the entrance of their home with their rear end at night in order to protect from predators
  • Laughing Kookaburras will share a similar sounding laugh with the rest of their family unit
  • ‘Macropodidae’, the family to which kangaroos belong, translates literally as ‘big feet’
  • The Duck-Billed Platypus and Echidna are the only mammals in the world that lay eggs
  • Tasmanian Devils are extremely vocal
  • Wombats are only pregnant for around 22 days
  • Loboscelidia Wasps have HORNS

  • Australian Earthworms are on average 1 metre long
  • Termites do not sleep

This is but a small glimpse into the fantastically wild world of exotic animals – there are thousands of species to learn about and environments to explore. The Australian Museum is a great place to start to whet the appetite for an interest in animal studies.

Our neighbours over in the UK have compiled a brilliant list of some of Australia’s best zoos and wildlife parks – perhaps take a look and investigate whether any may make a particularly interesting work environment. It never hurts to get ahead of the game and start reaching for your goals.
