Basic Nutrition Principles

Good nutrition is essential to improving a person’s health. We know that food is essential—it provides vital nutrients for survival and helps the body function and stay healthy.

Good nutritional intake should be the number one priority for anyone trying to improve their health and wellness. To make the most of good nutrition a person needs to develop realistic eating  habits that they can follow every day.

In order to understand some of the different nutritional approached used in todays world, we first need to examine some basic principles of nutrition, and this module will assist you to do this

Building Meal Plans for Clients

This topic provides information that is necessary in order to build meal plans. This includes building plans and looking at the meal types that will benefit a meal plan. As you work through the topic you will learn the importance of meal planning.

This topic introduces a range of meal planning options for yourself of your clients.

Carbohydrate Loading

Carbohydrate loading’ is probably one of the most overused terms in sports nutrition. Many people believe that if they are involved in sport of any kind that they need to ‘carb up’ and the way to do this is to eat a large amount of carbohydrates in the days leading up to their particular sporting event.

This could not be further from the truth and could in fact lead to a poor performance in the chosen sport, not an improved one. It is important for a fitness professional to understand the science and application of carbohydrate loading, and when it may be of benefit to a client.

Therefore, in this module we will examine carbohydrate loading, why people may choose to use it, the advantages and disadvantages of carbohydrate loading and the best types of food to use for this process.

Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting has grown in popularity in recent years. A simple Google search will bring up hundreds of different websites and blogs explaining the benefits of intermittent fasting and   describing the best methodology to use. However, it is important for a fitness professional to understand that intermittent fasting is not a diet.

Instead, it should be thought of as a sustainable  eating pattern.

With this in mind, this module will look at the different types of intermittent fasting, the impact intermittent fasting can have on many common health conditions, and how to  incorporate intermittent fasting into a manageable daily eating plan.

Ketogenic Diet

This module will introduce a fitness professional to ketogenic diets as a health intervention. A ketogenic diet is a very low carbohydrate diet, where the body produces ketones in the liver to be used as energy.

The goal of the ketogenic diet is to force a person’s body into this metabolic state, not through starvation, but through the elimination of carbohydrates.

The human body is incredibly adaptive and without carbohydrates, it will begin to burn ketones as the primary energy source. Optimal ketone levels offer many health, weight loss, physical and mental performance benefits. Throughout this module, the fitness professional will learn about different ketogenic diet approaches, the benefits of this type of eating and the different types of considerations that need to be taken.

Nutrition – Balancing Extremes

This module is designed to give the fitness professional an introduction to balancing extremes through the application of nutritional interventions.

In the module, you will explore how to balance diverse and paradoxical nutritional strategies, the role both hunger and hormones play in nutritional interventions, and how to manipulated nutrients and whole meals to achieve different wellness outcomes for clients.

This module acts as an introduction to nutritional therapy and gives the fitness professional a window in which to view how nutritional can be used as a possible intervention to manage health and wellness conditions.

When somebody eats can have almost as much effect on the body as what they eat.

This becomes even more relevant for people who undertake regular physical activity or exercise.

In this module, we’ll review the principles of workout nutrition and give practical recommendations to help a fitness professional coach their clients about what to eat before, during, and after exercise for the best health and performance outcomes.

Nutritional Recommendations for Weight Loss

Weight loss is one of, if not the most popular goals that clients may have for their health and wellness.

Unfortunately, when it comes to weight loss there are no ‘quick fixes’ and a long-term approach is required to lower body fat/weight levels while maintaining an ability to effectively participate in physical activity and exercise.

This module will show the fitness professional how to implement a successful weight loss/ nutritional plan for their clients and change the balance between their daily energy intake and energy expenditure.

The Anabolic Nutrient Timing Factor Nutrition for Muscle Growth

Nutrient timing means being mindful of when to eat, rather than just what to eat. Its premise is to support optimal performance during a training session, provide all that is needed for muscle growth, exploit glycogen replenishment after activity, and follow a diet that promotes growth and repair around the clock.

Nutrient timing is based on data supporting variances in hormonal release throughout the day and in response to exercise.

This module will explain the science behind nutrient timing, give examples of different nutrient timing protocols, and examine how nutrient timing can be applied to clients wanting to make body composition, health and wellness changes.

The Basics of Sports and Health Supplements

Sports supplementation is any dietary manipulation in an attempt to enhance athletic performance. The use of dietary manipulation dates back to Greek Olympians who ate large amounts of meat, dried figs, mushrooms, and strychnine to try to improve performance.

Today sports supplementation is big business. This module has been developed to give fitness professionals an insight into the world of supplementation, and to provide information about the different types of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, herbs, or botanicals (plants) extracts that may be of benefit to a client’s health and wellness.

The Importance of Hydration Before, During and After Exercise

The importance of hydration for good health and the proper function of each of the body’s systems cannot be overstated. Contrary to popular belief, simply drinking water when someone is thirsty is not good advice when it comes to properly hydrating the body.

Therefore, it is important that special attention be given to the importance of proper hydration, and how to achieve this. This module will explore the mechanisms of hydration and dehydration and give different guidelines for hydration that a fitness professional can utilize when working with clients undertaking different types of fitness activities.

Understanding How the Body uses Nutrients as Fuel for Energy

This module will examine how the body facilitates metabolic biochemistry.

In its simplest terms, metabolic biochemistry is what we refer to as ‘fuel in, energy out’. Throughout this module, we look at how the energy that the body gains from using fuel (i.e. food) is used to drive all the processes it needs to maintain proper function.

Fuel for the human body takes three basic forms: carbohydrates (sugars), protein, and fat, and this module will look at how the human body is capable of using all three of these fuel types, and under which circumstances is one type preferences over another.

Understanding Nutritional Deficiencies and Common Nutritional Intolerances

EA nutritional deficiency occurs when the body doesn’t absorb the necessary amount of a nutrient.

Deficiencies can lead to a variety of health problems, such as problems of digestion, skin problems, stunted or defective bone growth, and even dementia.

The purpose of this module is to give the fitness professional an overview of some of the key nutritional deficiencies that can affect their client’s health and wellness.

This module gives an introduction into some of the different areas of business operations that you should be aware of when working as a fitness professional.

It means to know where you are going, in order to better understand where you are currently, and what steps you are going to need to take to ensure success in your fitness business.

Looking After Your Clients (Being Client-Centric)

In this module, you will learn about the importance of looking after your existing client base, and how you can use some simple tips and tricks to lead to overall success for your health and fitness business.

Specifically in this module, the fitness professional will learn the importance of looking after their clients, how to develop effective client care tools to use with their existing client base, how to know when their clients need additional care and attention, the importance of knowing the ‘little details’ about the client and how to integrate client care activities into a daily personal training schedule.

Operating a Small Fitness Business

This module will give an insight into the requirements of operating a small fitness business, from both an operational and legal perspective. If you are planning on operating your own fitness business, you have to be sure you want to be more than just a fitness professional.

You must be prepared for the behind-the-scenes logistics that come with running a complete business- and this module will help prepare you for this.

A fitness professional wanting to operate their own business must have a passion for both fitness and business, paired with the acceptance that every aspect of the operation comes under their quality control. This module will discuss the requirements you will have as a fitness business owner for both insurance and professional registration.

For the purpose of this module, we discuss the requirements of a fitness professional if they are working as a sole trader/single operator only.

If the fitness professional is to own a larger business and employ more than one trainer then they would require a different level of insurance and registration cover based on your business plan and company structure.

Marketing Your Fitness Business

This module will teach the fitness professional about the importance of marketing and how to do it successfully in order to grow their fitness training business.
