How often should a dog be groomed, should you cut dog whiskers and mastering a paw trim

Whether a pup is long or short-haired, fluffy or hairy, big or small, keeping up with grooming is a vital part of caring for our furry friends.

It is the responsibility of pet parents to ensure their dogs are kept comfortable in all weathers and temperatures, as well as keeping on top of claws, paws and whisker maintenance.

Here at My Learning Online we recognise that every dog is different, and, therefore will require different levels of grooming and care.

In this blog we will take you through some of the basics of dog grooming, how often dogs should be groomed, what parts of the body should be groomed and how, as well as offering an in-depth look at the dog grooming courses we have on offer.

Stick with us, pup!

How often should a dog be groomed?

Depending on the breed of a dog, they may require more grooming than others. Long haired breeds in particular need regular grooming to ensure their coats are kept in good condition and that the dogs themselves do not become uncomfortable due to excessive hair growth.

As a rule of thumb, it is recommended that dogs get professionally groomed at least once a month for good maintenance of their claws and coats. However, dog owners should also keep up with daily/weekly grooming routines such as brushing and washing if required.

Allowing a dog’s hair to grow out too much can not only cause discomfort and overheating, it can also allow dirt and other things to get caught in the fur, creating bacterial risks and possible skin conditions or infections to arise.

Claws must also be kept short and neat to avoid ingrown claws and discomfort for dogs.

Mastering a paw trim

As well as keeping a dog’s claws in check, it is important to keep the fur between the paw pads short and neat.

If this hair grows too long it can hinder the dogs movement and comfort, dirt and bacteria getting caught and giving way to possible infections and irritations.

Dogs can be fussy about having their paws touched, so patience and a steady hand is vital when it comes to giving your pup a paw trim.

Should you cut dog whiskers?

The short answer: no. The one area of a dog that should be left well enough alone is their whiskers.

Whiskers allow dogs to feel and sense and are a vital part of their make-up, which is why a dog’s whiskers should never be removed.
